Rapids in the
Lais River

At this page I want to give some information about the rapids as well as show samples of the scenery. I have not yet been fishing in the stretch upstream Adolfsström so this page is about the part of the river from Lake Gauto down to the border of Västerbotten County.

Märkforsen - The Märk Rapid
The outlet of Lake Gauto forms an impressive canyon including a waterfall, the Märkfallet. This waterfall is the upper limit for grayling and white fish in the Lais River. The trail that follows the rapid is a part of the Nasa trail, a trail to a silver mine at the Norwegian boarder that was first in operation in the 17th century and for a second period between 1770-1821. The flora is rich with several rare species.

Laisluspen
Laisluspen is a short rapid at the outlet of Lake Laisan. "Lusp" or "luspen" is Sami language for the outlet of a lake. The fishing is very good but it is also a very popular fishing place especially during the weekends. Once when I was fishing here there were ten fly-fisher and two boats here. This evening I spent a lot of time at the riverside drinking coffee and talking to the other fishers. The road ends about 1,5 km from the rapid so you have to hike. It is also possible to rent a small boat. You rent the boats at the kiosk in Laisvall. At the road end there is also a small shelter with a fire seat.

Hästskoforsen - The Horseshoe Rapid
The rapids Ackerforsen and Hästskoforsen is the first rapids of several in a 5 km long part of the river down to the boarder to the Björkliden area. Brown trout is numerous at this stretch.  Dellikvallens fishing camp is situated close to the Hästskoforsen. A small bridge crosses the river so it is possible to fish from both sides. From the bridge it is only 1 km to a tributary, the Dellik River. At the rapid Hästskoforsen there is a shelter, a small cabin and several fire seats.

The Björkliden area
At the small village Björkliden there is a fishing camp. This stretch consists of alternating short rapids and slow stretches. In Sweden the Björkliden stretch is famouse for its excellent fly-fishing for big graylings.

Sadeforsen - The Sade Rapid
The rapid Sadeforsen is one of several rapids in a 15 km long stretch from the Björkliden area down to Lake Granselet. Other rapids in this stretch are Deppisforsen, Länningsforsen and Holmselforsen. The service is very good here with shelters, fire seats and dry firewood. At the West side of the river there is a timber drivers cabin where you can stay over night. However, you need to rent a boat to be able to cross the river.

Strycka
"Strycka" is a Swedish word for a slow stream. The road crosses the river at this site so it is easy to get access to the river. There is a small shelter here with a fire seat and dry firewood.

Granselluspen
Granselluspen is the outlet of Lake Granselet. This 2 km long stretch consists of several rapids, Luspeforsen and Per-Jonsforsen, a slow stretch and finally the rapid Ågotsforsen. The border that separates Norrbotten County and Västerbotten County crosses the river at Ågotsforsen. Here are many remains from the timber-driving epoch. You can stay over night in an old timber drivers cabin that is situated at the West side of the river. Here are also shelters on both sides of the rivers with fire seats and dry firewood.
